Rodents

Rats & Mice

The Black Death Plague in 1348 was thought to be carried by Oriental rat fleas residing on the black rats that were regular passengers on merchant ships, spreading throughout the Mediterranean and Europe killing almost one third of the European population in 2 years. The plague returned at various times, killing more people, until it left Europe in the 19th century.

Rodents are the kings of disease spread. They are clever and can easily adapt to their surroundings. There are three key species in South Africa. The Norway Rat, the Black Rat and the House Mouse. The destruction caused by rodents is enormous as they can easily eat through anything and survive without water for long periods of time. We recommend that you check regularly for signs of droppings and not to leave food open for long periods. Rats are not to be treated by hand unless you wear gloves, they can bite and cause severe infections.
